Eroski moves into region with first store

| International retailers

The Eroski group has become the latest major European retailer to launch operations in North Africa, through its Aliprox banner.

The group has opened one such store in the Spanish enclave of Melilla, via franchise operator Euroafrica de Supermercados. The outlet covers an area of 1,200 sq. m., and offers a wide mix of branded and own label products, with a focus on food products, including halal items.

The move is part of Eroski’s increasing focus on franchise outlets, which saw it open 52 such stores in the first half of the 2015 fiscal year. The group plans to end this year with 100 franchise supermarkets, up from the 58 it opened last year.
